What a weekend for college football. Who would have thought that two of the top teams would go down. People thought Missouri would have a chance against a depleted Georgia team but who would have thought Utah was up to the task against Stanford. The Utes have been playing teams tough at home but their win against the Cardinals put an end to any dream of them playing for a national championship. There are a few games of BCS significance this week including the big match up between Clemson and Florida St. Stanford has a chance to redeem themselves but it won’t be easy against the Bruins. Conference games are in full swing so lets look at this weeks matchups and picks.
The Tigers are now 6-0 and more important they are 2-0 in the SEC. The play of James Franklin and the defense has been the key to turn Mizzou around this year. The competition heats up again this week but for the Tigers one thing is the key. They are at home. Heading into Columbia this week are the Florida Gators coming in after a tough loss to LSU. They will look for revenge on the Tigers but it won’t come easy. The Tigers almost beat the Gators last year and as long as Franklin can remain healthy I think the Tigers can steal one at home. Right now the Gators are -3.5 favorite and by the weekend don’t be surprised if it is a pick em. I would jump on that spread right now and to be honest, I’m picking the Tigers to win.
prediction: Missouri 35- Florida 28
The Big Game ACC Version
Well we have already had a few showdowns in the SEC but now we look at the Atlantic Coastal Division in their big game for BCS standings. The matchup is between Clemson and Florida St. Both teams are undefeated but only Clemson has played top 15 talent so it will be good to see what the young phenom Jameis Winston can really do. Right now Clemson is a +3.0 point dog against the Seminoles but I’m sure the Tigers will be up to the task knowing they are aren’t favorites at home. Clemson’s defense is the key and similar to last week against BC they will need to to put a stop to the high powered offense of Florida St. I think the Jameis Winston will continue to have an amazing season but I’m going with Tajh Boyd and crew here. Clemson in a close one.
prediction: Clemson 28- Florida St. 21
Look for Duke to upset Virginia at home. Right now Virginia is a -3.0 favorite at home but I see the Blue Devils winning by a touchdown.
prediction: Duke 28- Virginia 17
The Rest of The Games
I really like a bunch of the spreads in the Big Ten and Pac-12 this week. Michigan better get there act together at home against a very dangerous Indiana team. They are favored by a touchdown at home but there constant inconsistent play will be on high alert against an Indy team that can move the ball. I think Michigan will pull it out but I would not take that -7. Ohio St needs to be challenged after dismantling both Wisconsin and Northwestern. They may meet their true test this weekend when they face a very good Iowa team. If this game was on the road i’m sure the line would be less than -17 but being in Columbus I can understand the number. I like Ohio St. to win behind the play of Braxton Miller but it won't come easy. The Hawkeyes can run the ball so look for them to try to control the clock. It will be hard for them to stop the big play ability of the Buckeyes and that could be the undoing. I like them to beat that +17 spread though and keep the game closer than expected.
prediction: Michigan 30- Indiana 27
prediction: Ohio St. 35 -Iowa 27
In the Pac-12 the big matchup is between UCLA and Stanford but there are some other games I’m keeping an eye. I think Washington has a chance against Arizona St. Right now the Sun Devils are a -3 point favorite but I like Washington for the upset. The uptempo offense of the Huskies should give the Sun Devils issues and they should be able to pull of a close win on the road. After the game against Oregon the Huskies showed they still need to fix a few things to be in the elite but I feel they have enough to beat Arizona St. Will Oregon finally not cover? Man that question compels me every week. I think we may have met the team that won’t allow that to happen. In steps Mike Leach and the Washington St. Cougars. Right now they are 5-2 against the spread and Halliday will be the key. If he can move the chains and limit turnovers the Cougars can score to keep the game from getting out of hand. The Ducks are a -38.5 which normally is low for them. I think the Cougars can do enough on offense to cover but don’t expect them to stop anything Oregon does. But hey after last Saturday who knows.
prediction: Washington 31- Arizona St 27
prediction: Oregon 52- Washington St. 35
With the BCS around the corner if the standing started today mine would look like this.
4. Florida St.
5. Ohio St.
8. Texas A&M
